Bands and Balboa this weekend

There are a bunch of opportunities to dance Balboa this weekend, including two great live bands Friday and Saturday night!

First up, Friday night — The White Heat Swing Sextet at Boston Swing Central! We’ve been pretty psyched by Craig Ball’s White Heat Swing Orchestra so we’re eager to check out his combo with the much touted stride piano player on BSC’s upright Steinway.

Saturday night, Hop to the Beat’s Uptown Swing Dance is bringing back the awesome Baby Soda Jazz Band!

Check it out, they’ve totally been to Boston before…

And finally, Sunday, we’re having our monthly Balboa on a Sunday Afternoon. We’re continuing to offer an introductory lesson starting at 3:30pm with the regular practice starting at 4:30pm. (Note that BSC is running its Lindy Hop Boot Camp on the same day from 1pm-4pm this month, so we’ll be starting out in the lobby of the Whistle Stop)

It’s here!

The weekend is finally here which means that Adam & Nelle’s Balboa workshops are TOMORROW afternoon at the Whistle Stop in Charlestown. If you aren’t already, now is the time to get really excited! And if you’ve got stuff during the day, you can still come to the practice session/dance which will start a little after 4:15pm this month due to the workshops — still only $3 or FREE if you’ve signed up for any of the workshops! (There won’t be any planned mini-lessons this month, but still feel free to ask for help, ideas or feedback.)

But you don’t have to wait until tomorrow to see Adam & Nelle because Blues Cafe is happening TONIGHT! Adam & Nelle will be teaching a beginner lesson at 8pm and will be doing a demo later in the evening. Adam will also be be one of the guest DJs so you can totally get your Bal on!

Balboa Month in the Northeast

It seems that October is shaping up to be a great month for Balboa here in the Northeast. There are lots of great Balboa opportunities this month, so I figured I’d mention them while I should be packing for CBC…

First up… CBC! Yep, the Canadian Balboa Championships are happening in Montreal this coming weekend, Oct 1-3!
And if you can’t make the drive up to Montreal, maybe check out Minor Swing in Lincoln, RI — live gypsy jazz at Swing Cafe!
Thursday Oct 7 we’ll be DJing for the Balboa night at the Stomp at 21 Marathon St, Arlington, MA from 9-11pm (FREE!)
Perhaps you’re thinking about a trip to NY? Why not head down the following weekend? And then you can check out the Balboa Crash Course with Carol Fraser on Sunday Oct 10 from 1-4pm.
Saturday Oct 16 Balboa Workshops with Steve & Rebecca Drzewiczewski from 12-5:30pm at the Providence Tango Mill followed by the Harvest Moon Dance from 8pm-midnight. (Special early registration rates end Friday, Oct 1!)
Saturday Oct 23 Blues Cafe is hosting another Lindy and Balboa night , with a beginner lesson by guest instructors Adam Speen & Nelle Cherry from Philadelphia!
Sunday October 24th we’re having a special Balboa on a Sunday Afternoon with workshops with Adam & Nelle from 12-4:30pm followed by our practice session from 4:30-7pm (special early registration rate ends Friday, Oct 15!)

Next Dance – August 15

Our next practice/dance will be — yes — Sunday afternoon, August 15th at Boston Swing Central’s Crosby Whistle Stop. We’ll have DJ’d music from 4pm-7pm for dancing Balboa — come work out those new moves, work on your fundamentals or just come and dance the whole time. We’re also going to add several short (15 minute-ish) informal mini-lessons every hour if you’d like to brush up on your basics.

First Dance!

We’re kicking off the first Boston Balboa practice/dance at Boston Swing Central’s Crosby Whistle Stop Sunday afternoon, July 25th. We’ll use the first hour as a semi-guided practice — bring that cool move you just learned at a workshop or just come and work on your fundamentals. After that — 2 hours of DJ’d music for dancing Balboa. All this for just three bucks.

Come chill out and dance some cool, smooth balboa at the air-conditioned Crosby Whistle Stop!
