About
Hey.
My name is Stan and I’m just this guy who wanted there to be more Balboa dancing in the Boston area, y’know?
No?
Well, I’d really like to be able to dance more Balboa. And for that to happen, there needs to be more people who want to dance Balboa and there needs to be more places to dance Balboa.
I’ve been social dancing in the Boston area since the fall of 1997. I started with the Monday night swing dance at Johnny D’s in Davis Square and soon started regularly attending lindy hop classes at Dancing Feats studio, back when they still taught Lindy Hop and East Coast Swing. In the early aughts, I’d take the occasional Balboa workshop when they came to town, but nothing really stuck until my wife finally talked me into attending All Balboa Weekend in Cleveland in 2008.
After 3* days of doing nothing but learn, practice and dance Balboa, I finally got it, and couldn’t get enough. We went to EBC that year, then Balboa Rendezvous the following April and it kind of snowballed from there.
So we’d travel to these awesome Balboa events, and then we’d get home… maybe practice a little in the living room… and then we’d go to the local dances… and we might get one Bal dance with each other, and maybe — maybe — one other dance with someone else. I kept wishing there was more Balboa in the area and then realized that if it really was that important to me, I might as well step up and try to do something about it. So I started a monthly dance/practice session, started organizing local workshops and have begun to branch out DJing and teaching to try and spread the love.
That’s basically it. I hope you’ll join us.
* it’s a 4 day event but I was too chicken to dance to more than once on the first night, barely managing to do “the basic” through a single song in its entirety.
